There Is A Silver Lining to Transitions

By Marianne Lynch, Executive Director

Our Family Service Department recently experienced a fairly large transition. Michelle Spada, the Family Services Director was called to serve the world in a different way by pursuing a dream job internationally. As exciting as this opportunity is for her, when someone leaves in such a small organization, it is always a bit difficult – for the staff as well as the families we serve.

I will be the first to say that transitions are hard. There is the time of uncertainty between the old and new team member. There is the probability that relationships will wane and momentum will be lost and then there is the learning curve that the new team member has to assume. Yes, they are hard…but, I find that sometimes there is a silver lining.

Last year we dedicated four homes, worked hard with our donations at the ReStore, and helped our Home-Buying families to learn how to become more financially stable through our Almost Home program.  This year we are looking forward to a new year with new opportunities, more volunteers, and more exciting projects!

Habitat Welcomes Megan Briggs, New Family Services Director

By Megan Briggs, Family Services Director

I am thrilled to have recently joined Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County in the role of Family Services Director. I am joining the team here after working in the Philadelphia non-profit sector for over ten years. I have worked in a wide-range of organizations, both grassroots and city-wide, whose missions have varied from youth workforce development to urban gardening. My positions within these organizations have also been wide-ranging – I’ve been the boots on the ground, led teams through multiple transitions, and built programs from the ground up. During this time, I’ve learned an incredible amount of knowledge from my colleagues, non-profit leaders, and most importantly from the people served through programming. Throughout these separate roles, the passion that drives my work is equity. I am always seeking to be an authentic ally in the advancement of equity.

My Favorite Time of Year

By Matt Sepe, Former Family Services Intern

The Holiday Season is an incredibly special time for me and it is by far my favorite time of the year. The excitement and the general feeling of happiness which seems to encompass everyone and everything can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming, but I nonetheless love it. Nonetheless, what truly makes the holiday season my favorite time of the year is the fact that I get to finally be home with my family.

Home Is Where the Heart Is

By Darell Daniels, Family Services Coordinator

For me, home is much more than just four walls. Home is support, love, understanding, safety, and so much more.

During the holiday season “home” takes on an entirely different meaning. It becomes more than just a space, it becomes a feeling. They say that home is where the heart is, and for me that is with my children. I know that the meaning of home lies in my greatest accomplishments and for me, that is my children. No matter where we are, whether be a house, an apartment, or any other temporary housing condition, as long as we are together we are home!

Going Home for the Holidays

By Elizabeth Hefner, Director of Development and Communications

After digging through my basement, I finally found my holiday decorations in the very back behind my camping gear.  I love this time of year!  Lights twinkle in the night sky with a familiar glow that reminds me of my childhood.  The crisp air reminds me that winter is on its way, and festive cheer makes any problem feel a little smaller.

As I decorate my home, I remember the history of each decoration and tradition, I celebrate the year that is coming to a close, and I look forward to the potential of the new year. I am so grateful that I have the ornaments I made out of Popsicle sticks when I was in first grade, and the snowman that guards the front door that came from my grandma.

A Note From Habitat's Executive Director

By Marianne Lynch

There is something about the presence of the holidays that always fills my spirit with gratitude. During this joyous time of year, I am reminded of all the ways that I am blessed, and the opportunities I will have to continue to support my family and friends.

At Habitat Montco, the work we do allows families to have a safe space to share these special holiday moments with their loved ones. With the help of our donors, volunteers, and sponsors, we look forward to expanding our impact on families throughout Montgomery County.

We extend a warm thank you to all who have contributed to the Habitat mission, and we encourage you to join us in celebrating the gift of generosity by giving back to your community this season.
